Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter

BEER REVIEW: Gonzo Imperial Porter by Flying Dog Brewery

Flying Dog Brewery has brewed a fitting beer to honor the gonzo writer known as Hunter S. Thompson: Gonzo Imperial Porter.  This complex ale will assault your taste buds and leave you pleasantly disorientated if you do not show it the proper respect.  By that I mean be weary of the 7.8% ABV (Alcohol By Volume) found in every 12 fl-oz bottle.  With a mocha flavor attached to it, this beer leaves a smokey flavor in your mouth.  Although it is more malty than hoppy, Gonzo Imperial Porter has a surprise hop kick.  This is due to the brewing process being dry hopped with a "shitload of Cascade hops." (Taken directly from Flying Dog Brewery's Website: http://www.flyingdogales.com/Beer-Specialty-Gonzo.aspx)

Gonzo Imperial Porter is labeled as a Porter but it has won awards in the Imperial Stout category and Strong Beer category; as well as a recent 2010 World Beer Cup Silver Medal for the Aged Beer Category.  So not only is the beer complex and strong, but it refuses to be classified under one category.  At the end, in the fine words of Hunter S. Thompson: "Good people drink good beer."  Of which, Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter is a good beer.

Note: I have yet to come across this dark, malty beer at any bars in Chicago.  I did find it in a 4-pack at Binny's Beverage Depot.  So if you Beer Nerds come across it on Draft at a Local Pub, please, do tell.
