During one of the recent 90 degrees days, we found ourselves at The Purple Pig right off Michigan Avenue in the River North area of Chicago. We fought the crowds that gathered to glimpse the movie set of the upcoming "Transformers" film. Inside the intimate Mediterranean-style restaurant I spotted the marvelous tap handle for Ayinger Brau Weisse, one of the truly great Hefeweizen beers. In addition to being an excellent wheat beer, Ayinger Brau Weisse makes for a satisfying & refreshing summer beverage.
One of the defining characteristics of this full-bodied Hefeweizen is the faint banana aroma and the thick foamy head accompanied with every fresh pour (my picture does not do it justice, but the actual Ayinger website has a marvelous picture: http://en.ayinger-bier.de/?pid=121). Where Ayinger Brau Weisse really stands out though is the refreshing, light taste that stays balanced from first sip to last sip. Truly this wheat beer was made for cooling off on a hot summer day.
Rarely do you find Ayinger Brau Weisse on tap and if you were ever to come across a bar that offered this gem of a Hefeweizen on draft, I encourage you to order a glass. Tip: The Purple Pig definitely has it on tap.
Ayinger Brau Weisse is Highly Recommended by Gonzalo
