Goose Island Bourbon County Stout

February 25th, 2010

BEER REVIEW: Goose Island Bourbon County Stout by Goose Island Brewing Co.

It was during my quest to find Dragon’s Milk that I was introduced to Goose Island Bourbon County Stout.  They told me that Bourbon County is on the same level of a Dragon’s Milk: a beer that awakes you.  Awake me it did.

After my initial pour into the snifter, the immediate reaction came from my nose.  The powerful aroma of Bourbon fills your nostrils.  This is no mistake.  Goose Island Bourbon County Stout is an Imperial Stout that has been aged in Bourbon barrels.  That means the geniuses at Goose Island found a use for those tapped out barrels of Bourbon.  My second reaction after inhaling a sniff of the Bourbon in Bourbon County was the taste.  Like most Imperial Stouts, you get a rich assortment of chocolate, caramel, smoke and vanilla.  It sounds like I am describing some sort of dessert, but trust me; only Adults over 21 should partake in this 13% Alcohol By Volume beer.  In addition to the dessert-like ingredients, the Bourbon aspect of this Imperial Stout endures in the taste and together they make every one of your senses become conscious.

The best part of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout is the drinkability.  You can enjoy it with a meal or pound it down till you can longer stand.  For a beer with such complex flavors and aroma, it is incredibly smooth.

Goose Island Christmas Ale

BEER REVIEW: Goose Island Christmas Ale by Goose Island Brewing Co

The Christmas Season officially arrives with a fresh batch of Goose Island Christmas Ale.  Available only during the months of November and December, Goose Island Christmas Ale is a Brown Ale that changes every year.  Simply meaning that the recipe of Goose Island Christmas Ale is altered just a bit each Christmas Season by the Brew Masters at the Goose Island Brewing Company.  The amount of Hops and the amount of Bitterness are the main ingredients that fluctuate.  When I first started drinking Goose Island Christmas Ale, it was known as a Scotch Ale.

As for the 2009 version of Goose Island Christmas Ale, you can expect the familiar mild spice aroma and brownish-red shade when you pour.  The best part of any version of the Goose Island Christmas Ale is the taste.  It is well paired with any Holiday Feast and goes down great on a snowy winter night as you relax while watching your favorite Christmas movie.

One of the bigger changes that occurred with the 2009 version of Goose Island Christmas Ale is how you can purchase it at stores.  No longer can you buy the usual beer bottle size of Goose Island Christmas Ale, it now comes in the larger, Pint Size bottle.  There is nothing wrong with a bigger bottle, but now it makes it harder to show up to a Christmas Party when you only have 2 Pint Size bottles versus a 6-pack.  Other than that, Goose Island Christmas Ale never disappoints.

Goose Island Harvest Ale

BEER REVIEW: Goose Island Harvest Ale by Goose Island Brewing Co

The Harvest Season begins and ends with Goose Island Harvest Ale. Brewed by the Goose Island Brewing Company, Goose Island Harvest Ale is one of the special seasonal beers made to compliment a special time of year. The special time of year is fall, the special beer is Harvest Ale. The flavor reminds you of the Goose Island India Pale Ale, only not as hoppy. With an amber color and a citrus-like aroma, the Goose Island Harvest Ale goes well at any Fall event: Football Games, Thanksgiving Dinners, Holiday Shopping, etc.

Yes, Holiday Shopping. Enjoy a pint of Harvest Ale as you relax at the local bar near the mall.

No matter how you decide to enjoy Goose Island Harvest Ale, make sure you enjoy it soon because it is only around for the Fall.

Goose Island Beer Tent at Ryan Field

October 17th, 2008

Last Saturday I attended the Michigan State – Northwestern football game at Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois. I enjoyed a great game between two strong rivals in the Big Ten. Before the game I walked behind the stadium to the baseball field where Northwestern has their “Wildcat Alley” area. One tradition I’ve enjoyed before Northwestern football games is drinking a complimentary cup of beer at the Goose Island Tent.

Who among us can turn down free beer ?

I highly recommend going to the Goose Island tent before attending a Northwestern University Wildcats football game at Ryan Field.

Good Bye Goose

Crazy to think that Goose Island Brewery on Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park has only been around for 20 years. A Chicago institution like Goose Island Beer evokes turn of the century glory and strong history through out the Second City known as Chicago. Only 20 years? Really? That means that Al Capone never smuggled Honker’s Ale during the Prohibition era. That means that Goose Island India Pale Ale was not present during the era of the “Chicago Machine” influencing politics across Chicagoland. Worst of all, it means that when the 1985 Chicago Bears celebrated their Super Bowl victory there was no refreshing 312 Urban Wheat Ale on hand for the celebration. I am glad to state that Goose Island Beer was around during the Chicago Bulls dynasty of the 1990’s. Most importantly, it was on hand when the Chicago White Sox won the 2005 MLB World Series. Someone needs to create a time machine to incorporate Goose Island beer deeper in the Chicago History Books. 20 years just does not seem right.

20 years is all we are going to get at the Lincoln Park brewery too. Due to lease issues, the original Lincoln Park location will shut down at the end of 2008. Glorious beer will no longer flow through the streets of Lincoln Park. Instead, you will have to drink Goose Island at one of the many neighborhood bars. But the Goose Island Brewery experience was not just about the beer, it was also about the great food menu. Which local Lincoln Park bar will dare to recreate the dynamic combination of Beer Nachos and India Pale Ale? Will they succeed? Plus, the atmosphere of the Clybourn Brew Pub welcomed all walks of life: from beer enthusiast to light drinkers, from party animals to stool hounds, from sports fans to fair-weather fans, all were welcomed at Goose Island Brew Pub on Clybourn.

The only hope left for Goose Island fans is that Goose Island Beer Company takes this opportunity to relocate to a hip, up-and-coming location. It would be great if a Goose Island Brewery pops up in the hip South Loop District. How about a Goose Island Brewery across from Millennium Park? Or maybe Goose Island will stay true to its Lincoln Park roots and look for a location on either Armitage, Webster or Lincoln Avenue? Even better, how about if Goose Island Beer Company opened a brewery down your block?

Take this opportunity to visit the Goose Island Brew Pub on Clybourn this year. Not only do they have a great 20th Anniversary Ale to celebrate their 20 year existence, but it will also be the last year you will be able to be part of Chicago history. When the doors close at the Goose Island Brewery in Lincoln Park later this year, a beer tasting tear will roll down my face.

Looptopia

EVENT REVIEW: LOOPTOPIA in Chicago, IL

The dusk till dawn event known as Looptopia had its grand debut in the Loop district of Downtown Chicago, Illinois this past Friday. Starting at 5pm on May 11th and concluding at 7am on May 12th, the 14-hour event proved to be a welcome addition to the already impressive list of events held in Chicago through out the year.

Looptopia is the celebration of diversity and culture. It’s patterned off similar all night events held in some European cities such as Paris, Madrid and Rome. The “Chicago Loop Alliance” is the force responsible for bringing Looptopia to life. Over 9 city blocks long and 6 city blocks wide, Looptopia brings together the best businesses in Chicago to create a once a year celebration that is going to be one of the most anticipated events of the year.

It was quite a sight to witness as people of all ages and cultures traveled across the landmarks and businesses of Chicago embarking on to the next scheduled event. There were over 20 destinations that people could have visited and over 70 scheduled events to experience. Some of the notable destinations included the 7th floor dance party in the Macy’s Building (which will always be known as the “Marshall Field’s” building to Chicagoans), the many “themed” tours available through out the evening at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Sullivan Dock events by the old Carson Pirie Scotts building, and the Sunrise Celebration held at the Millennium Park Promenade. All events were free unless otherwise noted…I did not have to pay for anything through out the night, well, except for drinks and food. But that was the best part: $2 bottles of Goose Island’s 312 Urban Wheat Ale! $2 bottles. In the city of Chicago. Downtown. For the price of a CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) subway ticket you can have yourself one of the finest beers to come out of Chicago. Goose Island 312 was not the only available beer; Corona and Corona Light were also being served, all for $2 each.

The crowds that flocked around the Loop district were as diverse as you can get. In the early stages of the evening you had families and people of all ages checking out the many free theatre shows or cabarets available. As the night progressed and as the sun rose, the only people left were the dedicated individuals who knew how to have a fun time. There are very few events that can bring out the best of a city and it’s inhabitants, Looptopia is one such event. The happy crowds and the lively entertainment along with the great landmarks of a great city came together to celebrate diversity and culture in an event that is a first of its kind in the United States, and is bound not to be the last. If the goal of Looptopia was to spread the idea of a culture, then consider it accomplished. Not since my travels around Europe have I felt so proud to be in a city were the nightlife does not limit you to visiting a bar (which is not a bad thing, but it’s nice to have an alternative).

Review: Raise your glass, Looptopia gets 5 cheers!

India Pale Ale by Goose Island

BEER REVIEW: GOOSE ISLAND IPA

Goose Island IPA is what beer should taste like: full of flavor, alcohol and hops. If you are not familiar with India Pale Ale’s, the version made by Goose Island Brewery is a great place to start (just be careful, every future IPA will have a hard act to follow). The first thing you’ll notice about the Goose Island IPA is the aroma. The pleasant aroma places you out in a lush green field on a beautiful spring day. After your first taste, the hop will kick in. IPA’s are made with more hops because back in the sailing across the world days beer without hop wouldn’t last the long voyages at sea. And since sailors wanted beer on their voyages back and forth from India, India Pale Ale was born. After the aroma and hops, what you have is one the freshest tasting beers you will ever have. Goose Island IPA is what light colored beers should taste like.

Goose Island Brew Pub

BAR REVIEW: GOOSE ISLAND BREW PUB

When in Chicago, Illinois (USA), you must visit the Goose Island Brewery. They have some of the tastiest beer you will ever drink. There are 2 locations; one is in Wrigleyville and the original, which is located in the Lincoln Park area. My suggestion, visit Goose Island Brew Pub in Lincoln Park on Clybourn (it has more variety of beers). Grab a table around the bar; order a pint of IPA (or if you stop by the Holiday Season, order their seasonal Christmas Ale…the Goose Island Christmas Ale is my Christmas present to myself every year). Don’t like IPA? Order a Beer Flight and sample 4 beers at once. Every beer is made in sweet home Chicago. Goose Island Beer makes Chicago proud!
