Burger Classic

BEER REVIEW: Burger Classic by Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co.

Behold a Beer named Burger Classic.  Traditionally, when you see the name Burger Classic you imagine looking at a fast-food menu.  Well friends, prepare to alter your perception because this great Lager is not found on the fast-food menu (yet).  It is barely found at bars around Chicago.  In fact, the only bar I have come across that serves the quality beer in a can known as Burger Classic is Boni’s Sports Bar in the neighborhood of Logan Square.  This small, family owned bar that regularly has their TV’s tuned to Baseball games from all over North, Central & South America declares to be one of the few bars outside of Ohio where you can drink Burger Classic.  It makes perfect sense when you think about it: Burger Classic is a beer that goes great with baseball.  Goes great whether you are watching Baseball or playing Baseball.  Burger Classic is a light beer in the style of a PBR or Old Style.  These beers are light, refreshing and very drinkable.

Burger Classic has been around since the year 1880.  It was first brewed in Cincinnati, Ohio, by The Burger Brewing Company and then purchased by the Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co..  That is as much history as I will give you on this notable Lager.  One of the reasons I enjoyed drinking Burger Classic so much was because this beer has been around since 1880!  Obviously the beer recipe is a proven winner because this beer is old and reliable.  I will not say that Burger Classic is the best beer you will ever drink, but I will say that it is an enjoyable beer that reminds you of a forgotten era.  An era where people lived simple lives and drank simple beer.

Hofbräu Oktoberfest bier

BEER REVIEW: Hofbräu Oktoberfest bier by Staatliches Hofbräuhaus (Hofbräu München)

The beginning of fall marks a season of change: the leaves begin to fall, the temperature begins to cool and the beer begins to flow. My favorite beers appear come the fall season. The beers get darker and more flavorful, just the way I like it! One of the major events that kick off the fall season drinking is Oktoberfest, which is held during the final days of September and the early days of October. You can always look forward to some good beers being produced thanks to Oktoberfest, thus is why I get so excited over fall: never a shortage of great beers. So it was with great expectations that I bought my first “Oktoberfest-style” beer of the season: Hofbräu Oktoberfest bier by Hofbräu München.

Since my expectations were so high, I initially did not enjoy this lager. It came off too weak and water downed to be categorized as an “Oktoberfest-style” beer. So I left my remaining 5 bottles in the fridge and did not give it another chance till over the weekend. You see, the last day of Oktoberfest was this past Sunday, so I was in the Oktoberfest spirit all weekend. Not until my 3rd bottle did I begin to enjoy this German lager. It goes down fairly smooth and is easy to drink since it is not as heavy. So I began to rationalize that the purpose of the beer is to be consumed in mass quantities over Oktoberfest in München. Therefore you will not truly enjoy this beer unless it is poured straight from the keg in front of a huge, thirsty crowd.

Something tells me the next time I drink this Oktoberfest-style lager it will be inside a tent during Oktoberfest in München. I’ll be on my fifth stein and ponder how in the world I ever gave this beer a “2 cheers” review.

Miller Chill

BEER REVIEW: Miller Chill by the Miller Brewing Co.

Seven-Up meets Miller Lite. That was my first reaction to the new “chelada-style” light lager created by the Miller Brewing Co. It’s called chelada-style because it takes its cue from the way beers are sometimes served in Mexico: with a squirt of lime and a rim full of salt. Instead of wasting your time preparing your beer by adding lime and salt, the Miller Brewing Company found a way to save you time by just offering the lime and salt mixed in with the beer. The result is a unique blend of lime juice and light beer. Not necessarily good, but not necessarily bad, Miller Chill offers a unique alternative to beer. Somehow I feel this beer will make a huge impact on beer drinking games since it goes down fast and smooth.

Tony’s Chicken and Tsing Tao

RESTAURANT REVIEW: LAO SZE CHUAN in Chinatown in Chicago, IL

BEER REVIEW: Tsing Tao Lager

Certain beer helps enhance your dining experience. Certain dining experiences help enhance your beer. Such is the ying and the yang relationship of the beer Tsing Tao and of the famous Tony’s Chicken, both of which are available at the great Chinatown restaurant known as “Lao Sze Chuan.” Head Chef Tony Hu produces a menu full of a wide variety of Chinese dishes. The menu may be full of many delicious dishes, but the beer selection is limited to Tsing Tao, Heineken and Miller Genuine Draft. Of course, a dining experience filled with Chinese food naturally calls for a glass of Tsing Tao Chinese beer. Tsing Tao is a lager with a light hop taste and a smooth finish; it tastes like the Chinese version of a Heineken. A cold glass of Tsing Tao should accompany any of the freshly prepared Chinese food dishes available at Lao Sze Chuan. Since we’ve been going to Lao Sze Chuan, our main entree staple is Tony’s 3-Chilli Chicken (aka Tony’s Chicken). In fact, we would consistently order Tony’s Chicken that the restaurant itself was referred to as “Tony’s Chicken.” It wasn’t until we started to spread the word of this fabulous Chinatown restaurant that we figured out it was actually called Lao Sze Chuan. No matter what your taste preference is, you will come out satisfied after an evening at Lao Sze Chuan. My suggestion: Order a round of Tsing Tao beer, some Egg Drop or Wonton Soup, Crab Rangoon (the best Crab Rangoon in the Chicago land area), Pot Stickers and as your main dishes Tony’s 3-Chilli Chicken and Sweet & Sour Pork. You will not be disappointed.

Stella Artois

BEER REVIEW: STELLA ARTOIS

Few beers can be as bold as to proclaim perfection, but the lager known as Stella Artois does just that. First brewed and enjoyed in Belgium, Stella Artois is now available across the globe. Everyone has the opportunity to enjoy Belgium’s best-selling beer. Of course, the best way to enjoy Stella Artois is by drinking it out of its special Chalice (glass). Stella Artois is the beer you order when you want to enjoy a lager. You drink it to appreciate tradition and presentation. There has been a strong marketing push as of late to ensure that beer drinkers savor the whole Stella Artois experience, and you should savor the experience, very few beers go out of their way to focus on presentation. That’s what I like most about Stella Artois, the presentation. But is it a perfect beer? Personally, lagers are not my first choice when it comes to selecting a beer but Stella Artois is the first lager I consider. Stella Artois is a great companion to a savory meal.
