3 heads are better than 1

April 5th, 2007

I’ve heard the many arguments that when it comes to starting a business, it’s usually better to go at it alone. When you open a business by yourself, you are the sole person in charge. There is no need to discuss your strategy or to split up the profits. It’s all you. Of course there are some downsides to being a sole proprietor, you intake all the costs and work. Those downsides are the upsides of starting a business with partners. In the case of BeerBin.com LLC, the factors of splitting the work load and splitting the profits (and losses) became our main reasons to go into business together. I’ve stated before that each of us at BeerBin.com LLC bring a different perspective to the business. Additionally, we bring different talents that help form the core of our start up. By utilizing our individual strengths we become a powerful group of entrepreneurs with one goal: To become the website of beer drinkers across the world. Together we embark on this adventure and together we will succeed. Which is the most important reason, I think, why it’s better to start a business with partners: you’re all along for the ride. The journey is a lot better when you have friends to share your glories and your failures.

Chicago St.Patrick’s Day Parade

CHICAGO ST.PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

My week of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the great city of Chicago has been quite an enjoyable affair. The festivities began on a Sunday and drew to an end on Saturday. As I’ve stated before, few cities celebrate St. Patrick’s Day like Chicago. You can thank the Irish blood that pumps through the City and the strong party scene for this great celebration that comes around only once a year. Everyone becomes Irish when they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the Second City. Green overfills the town as the inhabitants sport green attire and as the legendary Chicago River becomes Irish too (they dye the River green!). Our Saturday started off with a morning session of Green Beer and a savory breakfast buffet. We drank at Mother Hubbard’s in the River North section of Chicago. The original plan was to drink at Fado’s a couple blocks down, but all the Irish pubs and taverns in the city had lines that went around the corners. It’s in your best interest to arrive early or to booze up before you hit the bars so you’re feeling good while you wait in line. Mother Hubbard’s may not be as classy or cool as the surrounding bars of the infamous Hubbard Street, but it is one of the most enjoyable. They had a great draft selection (sorry, the draft list went missing after an hour or two of singing and drinking) and the crowd was a great mix of young and old people looking to drink some beers and have some fun.

After breakfast we proceeded to catch the dying of the Chicago River green. Spectators fill the bridges, sidewalks, docks, and plazas to get a glimpse of the magic. It was quite a site. 10:45 came and the boats and Irish bagpipes began the ceremony. Up and down they went spreading the orange dye that turns the Chicago River green. Once the ceremony was over, people either stayed or went back to their drinking ways. North or South, East or West: Would be Irish men and women roamed the great downtown that Chicago has to offer. There is also a parade that happens on Saturday, but after the dying of the river I decided to go back to the parties. It was remarkable to walk around the parks and plazas of the downtown area and be greeted by green men and women enjoying their beers. No matter where you went in the City, a party was just around the corner. Plus, if you get hungry, the best food from around the world is found at your fingertips (I indulged myself with some Gino’s East Deep Dish Spinach Pizza. Fan-freaking-tastic.)

Overall, the Chicago festivities that surround St. Patrick’s Day are not to be missed. I ran into people from all over the world: California, Japan, Ireland, Germany, Mexico, Australia and many more. They all came to Chicago because they knew Chicago does the St. Patrick’s Festivities right.

Beer School

BEER SCHOOL at The Beer Bistro in Chicago

When you give an event a name like “Beer School” you get a great idea of what’s in store. Don’t worry; there are no tests or boring teachers at this school. Beer School at The Beer Bistro is a once a month event that deserves your full, undivided attention. On the last Wednesday of every month, students gather in the bottom level of The Beer Bistro to educate themselves on beer, beer and beer. There are no pop quizzes or chalkboards, just plenty of beer and plenty of knowledge. Professors sample the beer style of the month and discuss the many attributes found with that beer. I sat in on the February class where the professor sampled and discussed Belgian ales. What a treat it was! From ales to lambics, this professor discussed the history behind the beers and the attributes that set them apart. My favorite beer of discussion was the Orval Trappist Ale. The dry-hopped and uniquely complex ale is one of the few beers that taste better with age. Made by Trappist monks in Belgium, this ale is considered a world classic. Most beers of discussion are readily available upstairs in the bar. Luckily for me, the Orval Trappist Ale was one of those beers that required extra attention (extra credit!) and it was found upstairs.

If you are in Chicago on the last Wednesday of the month, you will be wise to attend the next class. The Beer Bistro is located in the West Loop Gate neighborhood of Chicago at 1061 West Madison Street. Their phone number is (312) 433-0013.

Brehon Pub

BAR REVIEW: BREHON PUB

When you come across the northeast corner of Wells Street & Superior Street, you will notice an old fashioned Chicago building with a distinct Irish coat of arms hanging outside the building, this is the location of the River North neighborhood pub known as Brehon Pub. One of my first impressions of the pub was how it felt like I was in a “Chicago South Side Irish” pub. The decor inside is typical of a laid back pub you go to hang out in. The servers make you feel welcome and the beer keeps on flowing. I was very impressed to see that they offer Fat Tire on draft (you usually only find Fat Tire in bottles). In addition to Fat Tire, they have the Irish Trio (Guinness, Bass and Harps) and the standard beer found in Chicago bars. Brehon Pub does a great job of offering everything you would need to keep yourself occupied while hanging out: various wide screen TVs, a pool table, darts and plenty of character found through out the bar and the crowd. But do not confuse these offering as gimmicks, because as their slogan says: “Brehon Pub, serving Guinness not gimmicks since 1980.”

Brehon Pub is located at 731 N. Wells Street in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, IL. Phone: (312) 642-1071. Website: www.brehonpub.com

Can our idea work?

CAN OUR IDEA WORK?

Having an idea is the starting point. But not every idea makes it past the starting line. There are various tangibles you must consider when converting your idea into a reality:

1) Is there a need for the idea? (This is the most important, because if no one can make use of your idea, then it will not survive)

2) Do you have the resources necessary to grow your idea? (You can’t make a tree without seeds)

3) Are you committed to developing your idea until it succeeds or fails? (Win or Lose, you will not know what you’re made of until you play the game)

3) Are you committed to developing your idea until it succeeds or fails? (I ask this again because creating a business out of an idea is no easy task. You must be ready and willing to commit extra time and effort to developing every aspect of the idea to make it successful.)

So, can our idea of creating an on-line service that helps you track down your favorite beer no matter what part of the world you are in work? Short answer: “Yes”. Long answer: “Yes, but we’ll need Sam.”
