Chupacabras Pale Ale

March 15th, 2010

BEER REVIEW: Chupacabras by Cucapa Brewing Company

The legend of the Chupacabras speaks of a small mammal that sucks the blood of Goats & Livestock through out Mexico and the southern parts of the United States.  Chupacabras Pale Ale speaks of a beer from one of the first microbreweries in Mexico: Cucapa Brewing Company.  Both types of Chupacabras have bite!  Of course, I rather have the pleasant bite that is from the hops found in the Pale Ale known as Chupacabras then the unpleasant bite of a “real” Chupacabras.

Mexico is not known for its microbreweries.  The 2 big beer corporations, Grupo Modelo and FEMSA, basically have a strong hold on the market and the supplies needed to produce beer in Mexico.  Not that there is anything wrong with a Corona or a Dos Equis Green, but a little variety never hurt anyone.  Knowing that Mexico does not produce a lot of microbrews, I was shocked when I came across Chupacabras Pale Ale at Simone’s in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago.  Hopefully more Chicago area bars take notice and start importing microbrews from Mexico.

Chupacabras Pale Ale has a deep amber color with a nice foamy head.  If this Pale Ale had more hops and a bit more alcohol, it would be part of my favorite style of beer, the IPA family.  That is not a negative.  Chupacabras is very enjoyable to drink.  My hope is that I find it on draft locally.  If not, the cool can version will have to do until I make an excursion to the area of Baja California in Mexico where the Cucapa Brewing Company resides.

Drinking in Zihuatanejo, MEXICO

August 6th, 2008

The residents of Zihuatanejo are a fun, laid back crowd. I’m sure the beach lifestyle has something to do with it, but I also want to suggest that it is because of their ability to drink openly in public. The town of Zihuatanejo is located on the Pacific side of Mexico, about 2 hours north of Acapulco and a quick 40-minute flight from Mexico City. Like most of the other beach towns I have visited in Mexico, Zihua (as the locals refer to it) is a great place to unwind and enjoy a cool brew. Waking up to the ocean breeze and being able to enjoy a nice Victoria lager (the beer of choice in Zihua) anytime and anywhere must contribute to the happy mood of the population.

Zihua is not as crazy as Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta or Cancun, but that is where the appeal lies. You are not bumping into 18-year-old drunk Americans in Zihua, nor are you witnessing sorority girls going wild. What you do witness though, is the Mexico you hear about in romantic stories, the Mexico that is filled with passion for food, culture and amity. Zihuatanejo is a place where you can get away from corporate stores and chain restaurants. The town has a “downtown” area that instantly transports you to a time when streets where narrow, when food from restaurants can be smelled a block away and a time when street vendors valued your visit. Being that Zihua is next to the Pacific Ocean, seafood is fresh and delicious. Any fine meal you get goes great with a cold Victoria lager. Have them prepare the beer for you with lime and salt and you will not be disappointed.

After dinner, grab a six-pack of beer and head down to the basketball court located next to the beach in the downtown area. Basketball games go on till the late evening and since the court is not enclosed, you sit under the stars as the sights and sounds of the town engulf you. It has to be said, that having a beautiful beach and a cool beer in your hand make for a great living situation.

For those who do want drunken underage kids going wild, take a 15-minute trip up north to Ixtapa. That is the tourist destination with big hotels and chain bars among the main strip. For all others, find your way to Zihuatanejo and enjoy the beauty life has to offer.

El Malecon of Puerto Vallarta

April 11th, 2007

The beaches of Mexico are known around the world. The sandy beaches and tropical weather are the key ingredients in warm weather vacations. People travel from all over the world to enjoy a cool Corona (with a lime wedge) on one of the many beautiful beaches Mexico has to offer. The beaches of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco are no exceptions.

Puerto Vallarta is found on the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico and has its own Airport (which is getting expanded to accommodate the additional tourist traffic that has been increasing steadily through out the years). Our hotel was situated in the New Development/Resort area of Puerto Vallarta, so other than the local hotel bar, you have to make your way to the bustling boardwalk area of Puerto Vallarta to enjoy a nightlife like none other. This area is known as El Malecon and it is located in the center of the historic Puerto Vallarta. Surrounding the Malecon is the beach and a strip of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. Locals and tourists gather at night to drink on the boardwalk and to dance the night away in the many drinking spots found along this boardwalk strip. What makes El Malecon unique from any other late night experience I’ve had is the lively social drinking the happens through out the actual boardwalk. You can even argue that the best dancing and drinking is done outside the bars and clubs. Everyone brings their liquor of choice and situate themselves in front of their favorite club or bar and just drink and socialize the night away. On the Saturday night I was there, we brought our trusty bottle of Azul Tequila (by far the best brand of Tequila I have tasted) and our bottles of Corona. We situated ourselves outside of “Carlos O’Brians” and drank the night away. Through out the course of the night we traveled among the many social circles that materialize. With the music coming from the clubs and the social scene found at El Malecon, it’s very hard not to enjoy yourself. Plus, if you get there before dark, you can party from dusk till dawn (and you get to watch the Sun settle over the Pacific Ocean). You must check out the nightlife of El Malecon when you are in Puerto Vallarta, you will come out with an experience only found in dreams.
